An Experimental Study on Korean Vowels in Relation to Palatal Plate Thickness by Sonagraph

Abstract
Sonagraph was used to study and compare the transformation of pronunciation of seven different Korean vowels of AH(O}), UH(oi ), OH(-Y-), WOO(-¡Æt-), EU(a ), EE(o1 ), and EH(ol1), etc. as three different size of palatal plates thickness of 1mm, 2mm, and 3mm were applied. In a series of experiments administered to six normal individuals (three male and three female), some of the conclusions as compared to prior to insertion of acrylic resin palatal plates were obtained, as follows:
1) Transformation of pronunciation of vowels was clearly seen according to the different positions of Formant.
2) Lack of phonetic exercise with palatal plates is likely to incur irregular change of position of Formant.
3) Thinner acrylic resin plate causes lessened dysphonia; however, it cannot be totally free from distortion of pronunciation.
4) Phonetic effect of inserted palatal plate can be detected either auditorily or sonagraphically, or both.
5) Second Forment reported the wildest irregular transformation.
